Bill Doyle‘s Aran Islands

Aran islands 01

· website

Bill Doyle自1960年代以来拍摄的大量阿伦群岛渔民的生活剪影,均收录在《The Aran Islands: Another World》一书中。

Bill Doyle, who passed away last year at the age of 85, was often referred to as Ireland’s Cartier-Bresson and had a knack for artfully capturing the scenes of the world around him. During his trips to the islands, he was able to photograph many of the people and their daily activities and in 1999 a collection of these pictures were published together in a single volume titled The Aran Islands – Another World.

巍(Wei)

· website

“In the month of April, I became sick. It didn’t get better and I became really depressed. So my husband dragged me to Xiamen in May. I lived near the sea for 10 days. The beach series was basically made out of shells that were picked from the area. Each morning ill put one out, photograph it, and write down a sentence. These are all therapeutic healing for the body and soul.” - Wei

Wei, dream-drawer, graduate from the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. She lives in Beijing.

(Iwase Yoshiyuki)

“They carried the joys and sorrows of those living with the sea…” …I immersed myself in their world. – Iwase Yoshiyuki. Iwase Yoshiyuki was born in 1904 in Onjuku,  a fishing village on Pacific side of the Chiba peninsula, which encloses Tokyo Bay on the east. After graduating from Meiji University Law School in 1924, he took up his lifelong pursuits, heading the family sake distillery and documenting the receding traditions of costal Japan. In the late 1920s, young Yoshiyuki received an early Kodak camera as a gift. Since the main livelihood of the town came from the sea, he gravitated there, and soon found a passion for “the simple, even primitive beauty” of ama – girls and women who harvested seaweed, turban shells and abalone from beneath the coastal waters.
