Bill Doyle‘s Aran Islands

Aran islands 01

· website

Bill Doyle自1960年代以来拍摄的大量阿伦群岛渔民的生活剪影,均收录在《The Aran Islands: Another World》一书中。

Bill Doyle, who passed away last year at the age of 85, was often referred to as Ireland’s Cartier-Bresson and had a knack for artfully capturing the scenes of the world around him. During his trips to the islands, he was able to photograph many of the people and their daily activities and in 1999 a collection of these pictures were published together in a single volume titled The Aran Islands – Another World.

Andrea Zittel – Life’s Work

· website

For American Artist Andrea Zittel, Who is the subject of two major exhibition in New York, life is an ongoing work of performance art.

Many of these pieces began their lives in Zittel’s home, produced under her pseudo trademark, A-Z Administration Services. After living in New York for several years (A-Z East), Zittel moved out to California to a sprawling property in Joshua Tree (A-Z West). Her life and work are rigorously linked: daily rituals like cooking, cleaning and deciding what to wear become fodder for contem- plation and experimentation. She creates highly systematic, often portable do- mestic objects and structures that are part sculpture, part architecture. These test cases explore ideas about human nature and the social and psychological demands of everyday life – addressing notions of freedom, individualism, mo- bility and comfort. While Critical Space spans Zittel’s 15-yearcareer, revealing the depth and breadth of her practice, the Whitney Museum’s concurrent show displays several pieces of just one series. Small Liberties, on view at the Whitney’s Altria space, presents a line-up of “Wagon Stations,” customized mobile units created at the Joshua Tree site. Here, Zittel provides some insights into her thought-provoking practice as a living artist. (interview source)

Swedish vodka brand, ABSOLUT, has a long history of creative collaborations with artists all over the world. It’s worked with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Helmut Newton, Damien Hirst, Louise Bourgeois, David Shrigley, Douglas Gordon, Sylvie Fleury, Dan Wolgers, Hung Tung-Lu, and hundreds of other designers and photographers throughout the years. Continuing this tradition, ABSOLUT is launching its first ever limited edition bottle in China – exclusively designed by Chinese artists for the local Chinese creative community. ABSOLUT collaborated with artist Gao Yu (高瑀) to create a China-only redesign of brand’s iconic bottle titled “72 Transformations” (72变). ABSOLUT also worked with leading-edge Chinese photographer Chen Man (陈曼) to produce a series of avant-garde photographs to compliment Gao Yu’s bottle re-design and extend the brand’s “Transformations” campaign theme.

Why “72 Transformations”?

The Monkey King (Sun Wukong, 孙悟空), an important figure in traditional Chinese folklore, has the ability to transform himself 72 different ways as he overcomes obstacles on his pilgrimage to achieve enlightenment. It’s this ability that inspired Gao Yu as he thought through how to re-design the ABSOLUT bottle and express the brand’s “transformation” campaign theme.
